Japan May Ease Car Safety Standards in Trump Tariff Deal

Japan is considering relaxing some of its car-safety rules for American vehicles in谈判over U.S. tariffs. Tokyo faces a 24% levy on most exports to the United States, which has been temporarily frozen for 90 days but is set to expire in July. Economists warn that a snap-back could affect trade. A 10% universal tariff still applies, and finished cars carry a separate 25% charge. Japan believes it can narrow the gap between the two countries’ crash-test systems, and may offer to let U.S. models meet American standards instead of Japan’s in exchange for lighter tariffs.
